The Reject is a foundational movement of Jerkin' – a Hip Hop style that comes from California.

It's meant to look like you're skipping backward as if you're rejecting something in front of you.

How to do the Reject

  1. Start by putting on a song with an easy to follow beat. Now, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Then, start rocking back on each beat by bending your knees and leaning your torso back. This will help you get the comfortable with the rhythm.
  2. Once you’ve got the rhythm of your song down, stand sideways in front of a mirror. On the “and” count before the first beat hits, you’re gonna bring your right leg up and hop up on your left leg.
  3. On count one, allow your right leg to come down to the ground behind you, just as your left leg is also coming down to the ground from your upward hop. As you’re doing this, your torso rocks forward on the “and” count and rocks back on the “1” count. Think of the rock you were practicing at the beginning!
  4. Practice doing the movement for “and 1” several times until you feel comfortable. Once you’ve got it down on one side, try doing it on the other side, then switching from side to side. You should count “and 1, and 2, and 3, and 4” in your head as you lift and hop on each side.
  5. Practice skipping from side to side until you’ve really got the feeling memorized. Then, when you’re confident, speed it up and go twice as fast. Now, you should be counting “1, 2, 3, 4” as you skip twice as fast.

All done!

Make sure that as you’re doing this move, you don’t lean backward the whole time. That’ll cause you to move backwards on the floor and lose control of your body.

Keep rocking that torso forward!
