MAN, how times have changed.

Older dancers (especially from the SoCal dance community) – even if you can appreciate and welcome the ways dance has evolved, you’ll still feel pangs of nostalgia when going through this list.

Ready for a blast from the past?

1. Baggy Walmart sweats

Before overpriced Adidas soccer pants, we wore sweatpants bigger than trashbags. They were tight as hell. Not literally tho.It wasn’t just the sweats, either. Baggy t-shirts, big shoes. Oversized everything!

Trivia: Guess who it is in this video!!

2. The BZU Forum

There was a forum section on Boogiezone’s website that was basically like the reddit of the dance community. It was the most central place for dancers to connect online. Who else would spend hours chatting here??

HASHTAG #COMMUNITY!!!

3. Ordering DVDs of dance competitions / performances

Can you believe… that before Vibrancy / STEEZY / Gerald Nonato, you had to PRE-ORDER A SHOW DVD.WAIT FOR THE PERFORMANCE VIDEOS TO BE MADE INTO THE DVD.AND WAIT FOR ITTO COME IN THE MAIL???

Processes in dance (and life) were a lot slower back then.I know, what a nightmare for us instant-gratification folks. But this is just the way footage was...Until…

4. Thatsfresh.com

Fun fact! The name STEEZY, which started as “thatsteezy,” was an homage to thatsfresh.com – one of the first organizations in the community that served the dancers by producing show footage, documenting events through blog posts, and more.

Mad respect to the thatsfresh fam for pioneering so many movements in our community. We wouldn’t be who/where we are withoutcha!

5. Copying dance moves from music videos

Who else remembers rushing home, turning on the TV, and waiting for your favorite artists’ music videos to come on?

*Cue lip sync + dance party*Whether it was ‘Nsync or TLC, there was that one artist or band or performance that planted the “WOW I LOVE DANCING” seed.

6. No phones / cameras in dance classes

There are positives and negatives to advancements in technology, and while we can go on about the culture of recording/posting videos, YouTube fame, Instagram followers… we won’t.It’s just that older dancers miss the times when everyone was 1000% engaged in class – with each other – and the choreographer solo was this magical moment of inspiration, followed by a bunch of shoe-throwing (no one throws shoes anymore!!! Let’s bring shoe-throwing back!!!!!)

7. Kallusive

Ah, those infamous foil print shirts.

If you had one of these, you were automatically KOOL-usive. Read more about Kallusive here! How bittersweet is this?!These are 7 out of dozens of other things you’re probably remembering now.Comment below and share what you miss most!
