For those of us who grew up in the 90’s and watched 90’s cartoons, you know The Simpsons was one of the biggest cartoons back in the day.

So the inspiration for this dance was emulating Bart Simpson riding on his skateboard. In the cartoon, he always has his arms kind of flying behind him as he glides forward.

So keep that image in mind as you master this move!

How to do the Bart Simpson

  1. Step to the right with your right foot and then to the left with your left foot. Do this 2 Step with a little bounce to it, bending your knees.
  2. Now, when you step out, instead of just stepping in with the second foot, slide the foot in by dragging it on the floor. This will give you the gliding "skate" motion.
  3. Next, try doing the step and skate motion to the right, and this time, twist your hips and face your knees to the direction you are traveling. So when you travel to the right, your body should twist to face the right. Once you complete the motion of moving to the right, allow your body to face the front again. Practice this motion several times going to the right.
  4. Ready to go to the left? Step out with our left foot. Your right foot is gonna drag behind. As you step and drag, twist to the left, and as your feet come together, face the front. Practice the full movement several times going to the left.
  5. If you have both sides down, try it all together slowly, first sliding to the right and then to the left.
  6. Now you're ready to add in the arms. They go the opposite direction of your slide. So when you slide to the right, your arms kinda pull behind you to the left. Your head should turn in the same direction you are sliding.
  7. Try that same motion to the left. When going to the left, step out with the left, arms to the right and look to the left.
  8. Now try it both ways adding the arms. First slow and then double time, going right to left.

All done!

Make sure that when you're going full tempo, you allow yourself to groove and bounce. It doesn't need to look perfectly smooth. :)

You can also try a variation where you go left twice, then right twice if you have enough room on the dance floor!
