The Carlton dance move was popularized by the show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

The actor Alfonso Ribeiro, who played the character Carlton and created the dance, has said he was inspired by the movements Bruce Springsteen makes in his video, “Dancing In The Dark.”

It’s meant to be a little silly and comedic, so have fun widdit!

How to do the Carlton:

  1. Put on a song with an easy-to-follow beat
  2. Start with a basic 2 step, moving from side to side to the beat
  3. Then, start doing it two times as fast to that same beat
  4. As you start hitting your 2 step faster, add a little sway to your movement by leading each step with your hips, allowing your shoulders to arrive last
  5. Once you’ve got the basic groove down, start allowing your arms to sway from side to side. As you step to the right, your arms swing up and back to the right. As you step to the left, your arms swing up and back to the left.

That's it!
